Although they can be associated with other health issues, these symptoms are commonly caused by
temporomandibular jaw disorder (TMD). TMD often goes undiagnosed, which causes these symptoms to worsen over time.
"Chronic pain and lack of proper sleep robs people of the ability to enjoy life, negatively impacts relationships, work, and contributes to poor health. There is nothing more rewarding to me as a medical professional than to be able to help patients and restore their quality of life."
-Dr. Tanya Kushner
"I have suffered from TMD since I was diagnosed in my 20s during medical school (I'm now in my 60s) I have had major surgery on my jaw and jaw joints and seen multiple specialists over the years. I was referred to this practice by my general dentist. Dr. Kushner and her team have done more to help me with this problem than any other professional I have seen. She is thoughtful, caring, and compassionate, and her team echoes these same traits. When I first established care with this office, I was convinced I would never be comfortable or be able to eat normally again. The treatment plan and appliances I have been using have been nothing short of miraculous. Although I will never have a normal bite again, I have attained a level of comfort and function that I am very happy with and should serve me well for the rest of my life. I cannot recommend this office enough and offer a rating of 10 stars out of 5!! One bit of advice I would give to my fellow TMD sufferers; don't let anyone tell you this is "all in your head". This condition is very real and can be very debilitating. The only way TMD is "in your head" is in the fact that the TM joints attach to the base of your skull. Good luck to all of you!!"
- Steven Floerchinger MD, FACS
“My patients deserve the best. I knew early on that in order to become a true expert in the field of TMD and Sleep Apnea I need to seek out the best education available. To this day, dental schools do not cover any of this in their curriculum. My quest for knowledge has resulted in me becoming board certified with the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, the highest recognition in the field, that requires demonstrating practical knowledge and working together with sleep labs and MDs.”
- Dr. Tanya Kushner
Dr. Kushner is wonderful. This has been the best experience. The entire staff cares about everything about patient care from the minute you walk in until the end of the visit. Thank you all so much for all you do!
- Betti Ridge
Wow! Fantastic service. I have been losing sleep for over eleven years not knowing I had sleep apnea. The friendly ladies at the clinic were able to quickly diagnose and treat the issue.

The temporomandibular joint connects your lower jaw to your upper. When there is a problem with this joint, it is known as TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder. The excruciating pain that occurs when speaking or eating is due to an inflammation of the joint. TMD can be caused by a number of conditions such as trauma or injury to the joint, clenching or grinding the teeth, bite misalignments, and arthritis just to name a few. Regardless of the root cause, however, TMD can cause discomfort and at times, severe pain.

Eating
Chewing food is painful with TMD. While friends and family enjoy all types of food, TMD sufferers stick to soft foods or liquid diets.
Talking
Those with TMD may find the simple act of talking painful and avoid social situations all together.
Everyday Life
Simple tasks such as brushing teeth, or involuntary movements like yawning, can trigger unbearable pain for those with TMD.
Working
In extreme cases, TMD can cause blurred vision and dizziness, compromising a TMD sufferer’s ability to function at work or when driving.
“While we have helped thousands of patients find relief from TMD, there are still many sufferers who go undiagnosed and untreated. It’s our mission to educate and treat as many people with TMD so they can live a pain-free and healthy life.”
